Marijn Ton (VU) will present ongoing research in the EU-ERC COASTMOVE project, where a global agent-based model is developed to simulate human migration and adaptation in response to sea-level rise. By adopting an agent-based approach, our COASTMOVE team can model households and individuals explicitly, gaining valuable insights into their behavioral responses to coastal inundation, increased risk of flooding, salt intrusion and coastal erosion. The agent-based model not only predicts the effects of sea-level rise on migration and adaptation, but also allows us to analyze the effectiveness of policy options, such as sea walls and flood insurance, in protecting coastal communities. A first version of the agent-based model was developed for France, see Nature SR, 2023 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-023-31351-y, and we are currently in the process of upscaling the model to the global scale.
