CPB Lecture 2022 "The economist as a plumber? Hidden normativity in economic policy advice" (hybrid)
‘The economist as a plumber? Hidden normativity in economic policy advice’. This is the theme of the annual CPB Lecture on June 16 in the Glazen Zaal in The Hague. This year our guest is Diane Coyle, professor at the University of Cambridge. Diane Coyle is the co-director of the Bennett Institute for Public Policy, and author of the book ‘Cogs and monsters: what economics is, and what it should be’, chosen as the best economics book by the Financial Times in 2021. We cordially invite you to participate in this hybrid event.
In ’Cogs and monsters’, Diane Coyle argues that economists are not “plumbers”. Economic analyses are not purely technical but also contain implicit norms and values. Are policy economists sufficiently aware of this and do they communicate enough about it? We will discuss this with Diane Coyle, followed by a panel discussion with Senna Maatoug (previously policy advisor at the Ministry of Finance and current member of parliament for GroenLinks), Paul de Bijl (Chief Economist at ACM) and Marcel Timmer (Deputy Director of the CPB). Esther van Rijswijk is the moderator.

The lecture is a hybrid meeting that will take place in the Glazen Zaal in The Hague. Doors open at 14:30 and the event lasts from 15:00-17:00 with drinks afterwards.
