Abstract:
This seminar reports on three Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) conducted in Dutch vocational training colleges (‘mbo’). All three interventions aimed to reduce dropout rates amongst young students that still lack a sufficient degree (‘startkwalificatie’). The interventions focused on different elements of the dropout process: one aimed to improve the initial match between student and discipline, one aimed to improve parental involvement and another aimed to decrease illicit non-attendance. All interventions were initiated by the colleges themselves. To stimulate policy research with an experimental design the Ministry of Education provided a subsidy. The CPB administered and evaluated the RCTs.
The three experiments were executed successfully – the vocational training colleges were fully committed to follow the RCT protocol and to implement their own interventions. However, careful evaluations show that school dropout rates did not decrease significantly in any of the three experiments.
The CPB organises seminars for researchers. During these CPB Seminars, always held on Tuesday from 1.00 pm. to 2.00 pm., academic papers are presented and discussed.
