Abstract subject:
Government debt impacts economic growth positive at first and negative thereafter. This means that there is a sweet spot in which the debt level is growth-maximizing. Cristina Checherita Westphal will discuss the relationship between government debt and economic growth, its impact on fiscal sustainability and its implications for fiscal policy. If there is a growth maximizing debt target, why not target it?
Cristina Checherita Westphal works at the European Central Bank in the Fiscal Policy Division and has published several papers on the relationship between government debt and economic growth. She did her Masters in Economic Policy at Columbia University, New York, and PhD on Public Policy at George Mason University, VA, USA.
