NIAS and CPB present Jan Tinbergen Fellowship in General Economics

The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) and CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis proudly announce the establishment of a new fellowship in General Economics at NIAS in Wassenaar.

The fellowship, named after the famous Dutch economist and Nobel Prize winner Jan Tinbergen (1903-1994), is awarded to a renowned economic scholar from outside the Netherlands. It offers the recipient all the benefits of NIAS' interdisciplinary and international community of scholars while also facilitating closer cooperation with researchers from the CPB aiming at an international scientific forum.

The first holder of this prestigious fellowship is Paul A. Grout, Professor of Political Economy at the University of Bristol and Co-Director of the Centre for Market and Public Organisation (CMPO) at the same university.

Professor Grout will be at NIAS throughout the second semester of this research year (as of 14 February 2006). While at NIAS he hopes to further develop his research on institutional structures, ethos and intrinsic motivation. Among his most relevant journal articles are: "Investment and wages in the absence of binding contracts: a Nash bargaining approach", Econometrica (1984);"Welfare economics of decision making with changing tastes", Review of Economic Studies, 1982; "The Impact of Regulation on Market Risk", forthcoming in Journal of Financial Economics (with Ania Zalewska); "Public and private sector discount rates in public-private partnerships" in Economic Journal, (2003) [reprinted in The International Library of Critical Writings in Economics: The Economics of Public Private Partnerships, Grimsey and Lewis (eds), Edward Elgar (2005)].

NIAS is an institute for advanced study in the humanities and social sciences. Each year, the Institute invites around 50 carefully selected scholars, both from within and outside the Netherlands, to its centre in Wassenaar, where they are given an opportunity to do research for up to a ten-month period. Fellows carry out their work either as individuals or as part of one of the research theme groups, which NIAS initiates every year. NIAS is an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis makes independent economic analyses that are both scientifically sound and up-to-date, and relevant for policymaking in the Netherlands. CPB does not pursue this important work from an armchair in the proverbial ivory tower. On the contrary, the bureau's work on the edge of science and policy can only be done properly by creating a multitude of good relations with clients, other research centres, and other scientists. This is essential for protecting the societal significance and scientific quality of CPB's work.
