Abstract subject:
Consumers interested in buying a product often search a variety of options to find one that is sufficiently to their liking. Most of the literature assumes that consumers go through those options in a random order. Yet, a literature is now emerging in which firms can influence that order. Armstrong (Ordered Consumer Search, CEPR Discussion Paper DP11566, October 2016) provides a survey. This paper adds to that literature. Consumers can readily observe all prices but have to search to learn product characteristics. We show that this has important effects on the competitive effects of search costs.
