Abstract subject
This paper investigates how cannabis access affects student performance. Identification comes from a unique policy introduced in the city of Maastricht which discriminated legal access based on nationality. We use data on over 54,000 course grades of local students before and after policy introduction and apply a difference in difference approach. We find that the academic performance of students who are no longer allowed to buy marijuana increases substantially. Performance improvements are driven by young students and the effects are stronger for women and low performers. We conduct a number of robustness analyses and provide evidence on the underlying channels.
