The merits and limitations of this process are discussed, taking 25 years of Dutch experience in the area as a point of reference. An evaluation of their platforms can help political parties to design more efficient policies and to reach consensus on them, and to credibly inform voters about the implications of their platforms. The Dutch experience shows the information revelation principle to apply: the willingness of some parties to let their platform be evaluated forces other parties to follow suit. To ensure an objective and good-quality evaluation and to avoid free lunches and gaming by political parties, the rules of the game are very important.
